Dotwork builds images from thousands of individual dots — a tattoo cousin of pointillism. Varying the density and spacing creates shading and form, for a soft, textured look no solid black can match.

- Even, consistent dot placement is brutally hard — the difference between mesmerizing and muddy
- Look for crisp, evenly graded stippling in healed photos, since it can blur as it settles
- Suits placements that showcase symmetry — forearm, spine, chest, thigh, back of the hand
